Executive
Committee Meeting
6
May 2004
Members
Present:
Phil
Gorman, William Brockway, Grace Brockway, Don Duley, Dan Inhelder, Bob Bunnell,
Dave Bashaw, Brian Dowling, Brian White, Sarah Tucker, Lew Turner
Commodore
Don Duley called the meeting to order at 6:35pm.
Don
Duley (DD) thanked the Board for expressing their confidence in his leadership
by appointing him as the new Commodore and noted the first-class buttering-up
included in the minutes of last month’s meeting. Don thanked all the Committee
members in advance for their hard work in making this the best year ever for the
Valcour Sailing Club.
Brian
Dowling (BD) made a motion to accept the minutes of last month’s meeting, Phil
Gorman (PG) seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s
Report
Brian
White (BW) handed out the latest budget numbers and noted:
1. We
met our goal for Associate members.
2.
We’re still short of Regular members, but will likely get several signing up
at the Banquet on Saturday.
3. We
completed the purchase of the new Committee Boat.
Fundraising
Sarah
Tucker (ST) raised $450 in sponsorships for the Handbook, will explore Committee
Boat ads with Matt Spiegel, and will want some help selling any larger
sponsorships.
Fundraising
Ideas
BW
suggested that we try to get more members to step up to be Associate Members by
asking at the Banquet.
PG
asked about possibly charging $10 for Crew Memberships, but the questions of how
to define who is official crew and how to enforce this rule came up. BD noted
that the new Bylaws process will address this issue in detail.
BD
noted that a local Club owner had approached him with a possible fundraiser for
VSC. The Club will host a band; VSC will work the door and split the door
receipts 50/50 with the owner. BD and Dan Inhelder (DI) will discuss and pursue
this one.
Race
Committee
PG
reported that the schedule is done and the book is ready to print.
BD
motioned to approve the schedule Phil presented, DI seconded the motion, and it
passed unanimously.
The
book is a little different this year: PHRF and Soling topics are dealt with
separately. Went for a more concise book this year.
ST
noted that a bigger font would be much easier to read.
PG and
BW will try to get the book done before the Banquet on Saturday.
Race
Marks
PG
reported that three Club members took the new Committee Boat on a test run
today. They have a punchlist of items for the marina to fix.
The
marks will be in by May 16 at the latest.
There
will be a training session on how to operate the new Committee boat on May 19,
6:00pm, at the boat in PBB.
The
Race Committee is working on an OD Handbook.
Mayor’s
Cup Report
Kjell
Dahlen is not here.
Sunfish
Qualifier Regatta Report
The
guy who was supposed to contact Phil has not done so yet.
Soling
NAs
Ed
Trombley not here.
PG
noted that the sailing issues are all settled now, and the meetings are more
organizationally oriented.
Rating
Committee
BD
reported that PHRF forms are coming in.
Protest
Committee
No
Report.
Social
Events
DI
noted that the Banquet was all set for Saturday. We have 35 reservations so far,
hoping to hit 60.
DD
expressed a desire to have each Officer of the Club speak briefly at the
Banquet. We also decided that we would pass a hat and send the resulting
collection to the Maritime Museum in Doc McDowell’s name.
Bylaw
Update Report
BD
reported that the process is stalled right now, but he is planning another
meeting soon.
When
the initial work is done, the process requires an article – by – article
vote in a special meeting of members.
DD
requested a timeline from BD, long-term as necessary.
Clinton
Regatta
Chris
Duley (CD) is liaison to this. As he was not here, he had little to say.
City
Learn to Sail Program
CD
is also liaison to this program, and filed a similar report.
ST
noted that the Sea Scout Program had contacted her looking for a woman willing
to help girls explore the possibilities of this program. ST will find out more
about what they need.
Publicity
Bill
Brockway (WB) will continue to liaise with the Press Republican to publish race
schedule and results, and try to get more photos published this year.
DI will
update the VSC Display Board outside the PBB store.
BB
noted that the wooden parts of the display case need refinishing.
New
Business
DD
asked that people get agenda items to him well before the meetings so they can
be included on the agenda.
DD
asked that Club officers focus on the succession of their offices to new people
next year or the year after. Only by bringing new people into the Board can we
keep the Club fresh and responsive to the needs of its members.
The
next meeting of the VSC Executive Committee will be Thursday, June 3, at 6:30pm,
at the Inn at Smithfield. All Club members and interested friends are encouraged
to attend.
Respectfully
submitted,
Bill
Brockway
Club
Secretary
