Valcour Sailing Club Minutes
Minutes Of July 2010 Executive Board Meeting Valcour Sailing Club.
Meeting Called to order on Galilee at 18:50 hours 07/21/10
Present: JP Turgeon, Andy Sajor, Don Duley, Dan Inhelder, Bruce Gugliotta, Brian Dowling, Temporary Recording Secretary: Julie Laberge
Treasurers Report: We have ~$5500. in the treasury with all bills paid to date. We will be able to pay off the engine earlier than anticipated saving the club interest. We received $175 from the Omnium committee (from last year’s use of the committee boat) and will receive $100 from the Mayor’s Cup committee.
Race Committee: Marks are holding position in the bay and the locations seem to be fine. The oil tanks have been topped off on the committee boat and the fuel has been switched over to the reserve tank since we are unsure if the main tank gauge is reading correctly. The committee boat now has an electric horn for signaling purposes and the VHF is functioning. We should adopt a call channel for all race communication. An email will go out on that as soon as a channel is selected.
When questioned about the status of sail measurement, Andy would like to form a committee to deal with this. He believes if we measure one sail, we should measure all, regardless of certificates provided. Sails change over time and it would be unfair to single out any one boat. Brian noted it is the prerogative of the LCPHRF Committee to ask to inspect any boats’ sails and or equipment since a rating is predicated on the voluntary information given. There is a formal procedure to follow if one wants to challenge a boat’s rating.
PHRF Rater: Brian notes all boats except the Beneteau 10R have been rated, and that one should have her rating soon.
Rear Commodore: Motion to purchase more Burgee’s to have on have for club members to purchase. Motion seconded by Brian Dowling, motion carried unanimously. Don Duley noted we have paid the setup fee in the first sale, so we will make a little more per Burgee sold this time. Bruce asked if we were locked into the Barracks for our end of the year party. Plusses and minuses for the venue were discussed and Bruce will do some research on possible alternatives. Club flagpole will be scrapped until next year.
Member at Large: Dan will bring his clipboard around to the next Tuesday and Wednesday races to solicit crew members.
Commodore: JP would like to have a “kick ass” summer party in the near future. He will investigate possible venues for this. The party would be free to all club members with a BYOB rider. Discussion: One thought around the party was to hold it after a Sunday series race, However, change the format of the race to include Solings. What about Soling Sailors who race on PHRF boats, what should we do? The suggestion was made that the Solings go out, and the remaining crews and skippers be distributed on the PHRF boats which would race W/O spinnakers. The race would have two separate starts, racing in the bay racing, and a party afterwards. Andy will solicit comments via email. Bruce will be in charge of the Party logistics.
JP noted that the VSC is well represented in conference races and there has been positive talk about the club. The Omnium race is progressing as planned and the Clinton Community College Regatta is set to go as well. When Galilee attends the Regatta for Lake Champlain this Friday, JP will address the sailors gathered, inviting them to come sail the fine waters of Cumberland Bay.
Next Meeting Date: August 17 after Soling Race. Meeting adjourned 19:50 hours.
