Latest VSC News

New Website coming soon!!

09/19/10 It's official, the rather rotund woman has sung her last note!  The VSC season came to a close with a great weekend of racing. The Lake Champlain Soling Championships concluded the Official Valcour Sailing Club Season. Saturday whistled in with solid 25 knots of wind from the south and in a wild and wooly series of 4 races, punctuated with a series of broaches in the fleet which only Obelix and USA 812 seemed to avoid. That set the stage for a final day of smooth water and gentle North wind. From the ridiculous to the sublime, Lake Champlain showed her many faces but Obelix, taking all but one first, once again showed her mastery over the soling fleet. USA 812, skippered by Ed Trombley, came back from a near disastrous first two races on Saturday to over take Manfred Kanter skipping CAN 226 in Sunday's two race finale.  Pictures will be posted in a couple of weeks but if you click here you can see the rugged participants. TO view results click here.

9/15/10 That's a wrap folks! By the narrowest of margins "PJ" Turgeon nosed out Kjell Dahlen for the bullet in the last Wednesday night race of the 2010 season. Galilee secured first over-all for the B series and that rings down the VSC PHRF season for 2010. The Lake Champlain Soling Championships take place this weekend and that will conclude VSC racing. We will need some help to pick up the marks and put the committee boat to sleep for the winter. Anyone else notice what the pumping South wind did to the south mark?

09/14/10 The Tuesday Soling Series is over. Results are now posted as well as the series standings. The standings do not show any throw outs at this time.

9/08/10 The second to the last PHRF Wednesday was another Wild Wild West. The rocking and rolling in the first beat moderated back down, and the reefs came out but the jibs stayed up. Relatively flat water, but puffy wind lines gave the traveler tracks a work out and the back stays came on and off. In the end "PJ" Turgeon held on to capture another bullet, Don Duley's Real Escape took second with Dave Bashaw's Soundwave echoing in with a third.

moderated 09/07/10 Getting towards the end of the season where we get some big wind and warm water. The results are now updated and official as of September 7.

9/05/10 VSC Sweep Spinnaker A fleet in the Labor day weekend Omnium Regatta         If Mike Parsons did not stop to wash his mast in the first race Saturday, he would have taken first in Racing B cementing VSC's mastery of the Spinnaker division. Soundwave took first in Spinnaker A and first in Spinnaker Overall. JP (AKA PJ ) Turgeon was second by one point with Don Duley finishing third. Witchcraft was second in Spinnaker B fleet. High  winds from the west to south west over the weekend made it a sail makers dream. Click here for pictures

Kjell Dahlen awarded "Ray Cash" sailor award. By Unanimous vote, Dr. Kjell Dahlen was awarded the Ray Cash trophy for his tireless promotion of sailboat racing and his embodiment of the Corinthian spirit, in his racing and community endeavors. Kjell has participated in the Omnium for more years than he would like to count and has been the heart of the Plattsburgh Mayors Cup for nearly as many years. It was grand to see the good Doctor getting the recognition he well deserves. Click for Picture here

08/29/2010 Well its over, it almost wasn't but since one protest was not filed, a request for redress was dropped so the Sunday season basically stays as it was before the McDowell race was sailed. Alert sailors heard bagpipes play near the McDowell Homestead on Day Point, bringing up memories of the "old man" and his mischievous sailing tactics. Kjell Dahlen came on strong to capture first with a corrected time of just over 2 hours and 30 minutes, about 90 seconds faster than JP. And exactly two minutes ahead of Craig. If Mike Parsons did not stop to wash his mast in the first race Saturday, he would have taken first in Racing B.By Unanimous vote, Dr. Kjell Dahlen was awarded the Ray Cash trophy for his tireless promotion of sailboat racing and his embodiment of the Corinthian spirit in his racing and community endeavors. It was grand to see the good Doctor getting the recognition he well deserves.

Congratulations to Dave Bashaw and crew aboard Soundwave, who survived a scare on this last race to take the over-all first place on the Sunday series. JP Turgeon's Galilee tied Soundwave in total points but due to Soundwave's superior ammo belt (held more bullets). She takes first. Second went to Galilee with 14 points, third to Kjell Dahlen's Freya with 16 points, fourth to Craig Meyerson's Souvenir, with 22 points and fifth to Don Duley's TBD (will you think of a name Don?) with 25 points.

A final note. We are nearing the end of the season and it is time to plan for next year. We are in need of new blood to invigorate the club so if you have the urge, or have been critical of the leadership over the past couple of years, it is time to step up or shut up.  JP will appoint a nomination committee, but if you have the guts for a position on the board, let a current board member know of your intensions so we can put you on the ballot.

08/26/2010  To all you gallant followers of the Valcour Sailing Club Website: The Webmaster has changed and I am sure there will be some glitches over the next couple of weeks as we train a new master. Please hang in there, change is often good, although it can often be a bit rough in the beginning.

PHRF B5 Abandoned due to lack of wind. Of course, as soon as it was abandoned, the wind came up!

Soling 13:

A light breeze oscillating from the NNE led Soundwave to set a W/L to a yellow mark. USA 812, was able to get the better of CAN 225 in the first race while they were still figuring out the "loaner". CAN 225 took advantage of some pressure that filled in from the west to make a comeback in race two which was run to the VSC North mark, CAN 225 collected the win and top honors for the night.

Valcour Race:

I hope all have recovered from a brain boiler weekend. If Saturday did not prove to be enough high speed excitement, the hard core glutton's for punishment gathered again to drift around a fluky W/L course in the bay.
After staking out a commanding lead, Galilee ran out of air and saw the fleet take advantage of new wind to scoot on by with the sounds of the Mormon "Tabernac!" choir echoing over the water. Soundwave took advantage of the new energy and and finished first, boat for boat. It was good to see Luc and Rubpert join the fun too. Lets hope our light air days are over and we can sail in some consistent wind ending our feast or famine wind conditions.

Couple of notes, when times are taken on the report form, please fill out to the second. Also, there was some discussion about holding sail shape in light air. Jean Paul form across the border said it was his understanding that you could not touch the sails ahead of the clew. It was permissible to trim the sail by hand at the clew but beyond that it was not allowed. I looked at the rules but could not find anything specific on that but maybe someone else knows more and could fill us in.

Results:  Clinton Community College Regatta aka Champlain Regatta

Under light winds and overcast skies, Clinton Community College held its annual Champlain Regatta Saturday with the help of the Valcour Sailing Club and the Champlain Valley BPW association. Spectators on the College grounds were treated to a "play by play" by Bill Rowe, an expert on sailboat racing, along with live audio from the race course via VHF radio. Bill's commentary pointed out "tactical maneuvers" and "bad sail handling" among the competitors. In the end, Dave Bashaw's Soundwave, with Ty Kretser at the helm took the racing division for the third year in a row. Craig Meyerson's Souvenir took second and "PJ" Turgeon's Galilee, was third.
In the Jib and Main Division, Charlie Mitchell skippered Andy Sajor's Chaousarou, to first place over Donald Moore's Delphinus, followed by Tom Metz's "Touch of Blue". Sailors  retreated to the College Bluff to enjoy a Lobster and Rib dinner with all the fixings after the race.
Due to a mistaken call by committee, Freya sailed toward the wrong mark and did not finish. In keeping with good sportsmanship and his gentlemanly demeanor, Kjell did not make an issue of it and the race was able to be scored without protest.

Clinton Community College Regatta aka Champlain Regatta

Here is the prelims for the Regatta:

The course will be a triangle with an upwind finish for the JAM fleet with their start at 10:00 (09:55 warning). The spinnaker fleet will follow at 10:05 doing a modified Olympic Triangle. The meeting area will be in the waters off the Community College.  The mark locations will be adjusted according to the wind direction. The upwind will be about 1.5 miles, and the reaching legs about the same so the cruising course will be around 6 miles long (two up-winds and two reaches).
The Spinnaker class will complete a triangle with a windward, leeward, windward for about 9 miles.  We are keeping it short to allow competitors time to get back to the college for the feast.

PHRF B4

A sweet night in the bay. Big Dan pulled the trigger as OD and we got off a nice, three lap W/L in a gentle northerly breeze.  Zoe Sajor and boyfriend Connor Lee, came out on their last night in town and proved to be the good luck charm needed to bring Galilee down the final stretch in first place and garnering sole possession of 1st place in the tightly contested PHRF B series with 5 points.  Soundwave has 6 and Souvenir 7 points for 2d and 3d, respectively, in the series.

Isle St. Michel

Another wild one! Ed Trombley was grinning ear to ear seeing the high winds help pay another month of tuition! Big waves, sunny skies and a few broaches had skippers on edge and crews ever vigilant trying to keep their boats under control. Kjell Dahlen never lost contact and took his one design J to earn a bullet in this wild and woolly race. Dave Bashaw, kept his race committee on station  as 4-6 foot rollers swept through Cumberland bay with velocities of 27 kts and up pounded in. Crews struggled to keep their boats under control and gear failures to a minimum. JP Turgeon saw his vang explode as he turned the weather mark, and a quick jury rig kept things from going from bad to worse. Everyone saw some eyes as big as saucers at one time or another in this race.  Kudos for everyone finishing and no one going to the ER.

PHRF B3
After all those wild weather nights, it was nice to have something pleasant to sail around in. Flat water and a good breeze made for a good night to get the trim right. Dan Inhelder set a nice W/L with 1.5 mile upwind where looking for velocity was key. JP kept his big Beneteau rolling from pressure to pressure to take the bullet.  In the "slow"  boat class, Souvenir came out on top and finished 2d overall with the geriatric foredeck of Mike Parsons and Craig Meyerson.  Soundwave finished 3d.

SOLING 11
Well we were sitting on Galilee looking at the ripple-less water and betting if the wind would come up as predicted from the North. Then, a little breeze started to come up followed by a big squall that roared in from the North, blowing the boats on the gas dock up and into it. The soling sailors sprang into action helping the unsuspecting cruisers keep their boats from getting smashed up, while the wind hit upwards of 34 knots (as reported by Silvey on B dock). The front blew through and a nice even Northerly settled in when Ed Trombley got a call and had to leave on family business. Brian and Roland opted to stay on shore so Mike Hagadorn and yours truly joined Jean Pierre to do battle with Peter. Mike and Marty. Dave, Ty and company from Soundwave set up a nice W/L (using the yellow cylinders) and we got off a couple of real nice match races. The leads changed a lot in both races but in the end, it was Peter and company who took both races. The air was warm, the breeze fine and the racing superb, too bad the others did not stick around.

For Full Results click on Schedule and Results link to the left.

SOLING 10 - We got off in pretty good conditions with a nice 15 kts of air. It slowly died down and the second race turned into a drifter, with Mike Parson's finishing the boats in a rather unconventional way as the skies opened up and you could not see 100 yards in any direction. The boats ended up having to drain before they could be lifted out.  For Full Results click on Schedule and Results link to the left.

NAKED TURTLE RACE - Those who were there know what it was, and those who were not, missed a great day of sailing. Well that is for some of the participants, sail failures had Frøya and Souvenir withdraw from the action but the three remaining boats were able to try out one of the 2010 courses designed by Craig Meyerson. It was a fun figure 8 around the islands of Crab and Valcour for TBD, Soundwave and Galilée, who's extra deep keel had to make some wide sweeps to avoid a reef or two. In the end, it was a good test of crews and boats, with Soundwave once again showing her mastery over the rest of the fleet.  See Andy Sajor's excellent photos in the Photo Op section to the left.

PHRF B2 - Note from the O.D.:  It was a tricky one to run with the wind starting out west then north for 5 minutes then North East then East.  In the end we started to the east mark for one lap and lucky I had already inflated and set a North East mark.  So the last two laps were around that.  In the end I had all the anchors out with both yellow marks inflated.  Of course the wind shut off in the 3rd lap without any warning.  After two laps in which Gallilee did in 32 minutes I was really thinking about moving the finish line back to make the race longer.  That goodness I did not do that as the third lap took them 45 minutes.  It was a great plan until the wind screwed up the ending.  This is really a stupid sport. (<;  Maybe when the wind dies we should have the committee boat deliver jello shots to the crews.  Just thinking out of the box.

SOLING 9

With half the soling fleet MIA, the remaining skippers felt it would be best to bag the race since the results would not properly represent the fleet. It was also decided that in the interest of the One Design Spirit, all boat results would be counted.

REGATTA FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN
VSC's sole entrant, Galilee, finished second of 23 spinnaker boats in this light air Cracked Pot style staggered start pursuit race.   The classic sloop Mashnee, crewed principally by kids from the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center, took first place honors. Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

PHRF A8
The final do or die race of the hotly contested PHRF A series did not materialize thanks to predictions of nasty thunderstorms, handing Soundwave a well-earned first place finish in the series with 12 points.  Galilee, who was feast or famine with the most bullets and most last place finishes, won the tiebreaker for second place over Souvenir's consistent second and third place finishes with 15 points.  Freya fell to fourth just one point behind second and third place.  TBD rounded out the fleet with 21 points.  For the complete PHRF A final standings click on Series Standings.

SOLING 8
Despite the NWS predictions, a subtle south wind dropped in long enough for Soling 8 to get off two races. Dave Bashaw and company set a short W/L to the center mark with an 15 degree oscillating breeze. Obelix was back in great form taking two bullets with the rest of the field switching places. Ed and Andy hauled John out of Mr. Mom duty to take second for the evening, with Shadowfax thirdClick on Schedule and Results for complete results.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN OVERNIGHT RACE

In this 11-hour, 62.5 mile endurance race, the five man crew of Souvenir (2d in class, 4th overall) dueled Luna Sea (1st in class, 3d overall) all through the breezy, starlit night, exchanging leads numerous times.  On the final downwind leg from Four Brothers to Crab, Souvenir took an estimated five minute actual lead over her chief rival, only to see it evaporate in the flukey winds around Crab.  On the last leg, an upwind beat in 20 kts  to Carlton Prize, with Luna Sea a mere 30 seconds behind and having an advantage 3 1/2 minute handicap, Souvenir tried to extend her lead in a tacking duel.   Luna Sea bested the duel and crossed the finish line 30 seconds ahead of Souvenir.  Spin B boats Lift Ticket (J-27) and Dog House (J-29), although finishing 20-30 minutes behind, corrected to 1st and 2d overall, respectively.  VSC's Galilee took line honors.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

PHRF A7

Beth White set the PHRF fleet on a nice W/L course towards the club North mark. Those boats that went right towards the pressure made out well, however they probably forgot that it was Bastille Day, so JP's Galilee stormed back in fine French form to take the lead on the second lap never relinquishing it in a fading wind.  However, the results are not official until the protest filed by Souvenir against TBD is resolved.

SOLING 7

What a difference a breeze makes. Although we did not get off a second race due to the threat of T-storms, we did have a nice w/l in the center bay with an average wind speed of 10 kts. After this past weekend, it felt like Scottie gave us back our warp drive!

Roland and crew rolled out to an early lead taking advantage of the favored boat end and never looked back, finishing well ahead of Dan Inhelder who nosed out Ed and company by 6 inches in a tightly fought downwind battle. Brian White filled out the field of finishers while newcomer to the fleet, JP Turgeon, had some on shore problems which kept him from starting the race on time.

Valcour Race

Hope all have recovered from a brain boiler weekend. Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Mayor's Cup

The two race light air regatta provided Don Duley's TBD as the highest scoring VSC entry, placing second in Spinnaker A and fifth overall.  Other VSC entries rounding out the top ten overall are Witchcraft (9th overall; 4th in Spin B) and Souvenir (10th overall; 4th in Spin A).  The J-24 Fawn Liebowitz won the Mayor's Cup for first place overall in the spinnaker division.  In the cruising division VSC's Andy Sajor's Chaosarou placed second overall; Shelburne, VT's Tromso came away with the trophy.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Wednesday PHRF A6

Well another Wednesday drifted into the books with a special thank you to Dan Inhelder who took Guy's OD duty. Dan ran a nice little W/L course in the bay where JP's big Beneteau was able to crawl away from the start to get clear air and pick her course, never looking back. Behind her, Souvenir, attempting to sail her proper beam reach course in the light winds, and Soundwave, also attempting to sail her proper course, a little deeper than Souvenir's, tangled a bit on the first downwind leg.  Although protests were hailed, Soundwave never filed so Souvenir withdrew hers.  Souvenir finished second, TBD third.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Soling 6

TBD  prevails on this two leg shortened W/L drifter after splitting from the fleet to go right then re-engaging the fleet left.   Obelix finished second, Galilee Lite third.

2010 Soling North American Championships

Three boats from the Valcour Sailing Club traveled to Bath, Ontario during the holiday weekend July 2-4, for the 2010 Soling North American Championships.  The weekend was a great success and a fun time was had by all that attended.  The Loyalist Cove Soling Fleet hosted an excellent regatta with great racing and good social events.  Sixteen boats entered the regatta from locations such as Annapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Toronto, and Plattsburgh.

Peter Hall and his crew on CAN 225 took the VSC honors by finishing the regatta in third place.  On USA 780 Brian White, Bruce Gugilotta, and Brad Dumas had a respectable showing with a 7th place finish and occasionally giving the top boats a run for their money.  Roland Sherman, Laurie Gugilotta, and Mark Stata on USA 835 finished the regatta in 11th place.  The regatta was won by Hans Fogh (CAN 230)  from Toronto. Stuart Walker on USA 839 finished in Second.  For full results visit www.soling.com or click here

Cracked Pot: Light variable winds ruled the day for this highly favored staggered start race.  TBD took a huge first leg lead by being the only boat to play the right side of the N-S course and maintained the lead on the first downwind leg while Galilee, Freya, & Souvenir, all struggled inexplicably with their spin sets.  Soundwave kept the pressure on TBD on the second upwind by using TBD's right side first leg strategy.  As the two approached the second upwind rounding, Galilee, made her move in a strong center course zephyr which Souvenir also took advantage of.  At the second upwind mark, Soundwave and Galilee overcame TBD with Souvenir a few boat lengths behind.  Soundwave opened a big lead on the last downwind while Galilee struggled once again with her spin set.  TBD overtook Galilee with Souvenir tightly behind in a beam reach, fighting for a second place finish.  As the wind shifted aft and the three approaching the finish, Souvenir, under her reaching spinnaker fell behind and could only hope Galilee would take TBD up to push her above the finish line.  But Galilee chose to go straight for the line and with superior speed edged TBD by a mere foot to take second.  TBD finished third. Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Eisenger Cup: In strong south winds, Soundwave, takes first overall,  by virtue of a first in the first race, and Freya's 13 and 21 second win over Soundwave and Souvenir, respectively, in the second race of this two-race regatta.  Freya edges Souvenir for second overall with a third and first place finish.  Souvenir's second and third finishes earns her third place overall.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

PHRF A5
They came, they saw they failed to finish.

Mike Parsons jumped in to run the Wednesday A5 race for the absent OD. Your Vice Commodore helped Mike get on station, and agreed with him that it would be a good idea to run a triangle course since the angles were good and the wind was up. Unfortunately they did not consult the book until after the race was started and your VC did not remember the 09 book shows a double W/L before the finish. Galilee, being out front, thought they finished even though there was no sound, the other boats in the fleet never checked their course books either because everyone else "finished" as Galilee did. No finish, no race! Too bad for Kjell, once again a high wind race that is good for his one design configuration goes by the wayside. At lease we all know he would have been first if the race had been shortened to that mark.

A lesson to be remembered by all last night.

Soling 5The ominous dark skies yielded little rain, but did bring in some gusty west wind for the first race of the Valcour Sailing Club's Soling Tuesday series #5. Gear failures and a broach or two made the positions change throughout the legs. The wind did settle down for the second race of the night, and a tight finish yielded a protest filed by USA 835 against CAN 225 which will be heard next Tuesday. Once again Bruce Gugliotta and crew grilled up a fine post race dinner as several boats got ready to depart for the Soling North Americans in Bath Ontario.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Odziozo:  The only VSC entrant, Souvenir, after taking a two-penalty turn, recovered to finish third overall and in class in the 2d Lake Champlain Series race, LCYC's Odziozo.  The race was tightly contested in the 18 boat spinnaker division for two of the three legs of the shortened modified olympic triangle from Proctor's Shoal upwind to Quaker Point, a tight reach to run to Four Brothers, then a tight reach to beat back to Proctor's for the finish.  On the last leg, Luna Sea took advantage of light fluky winds to open a commanding lead for the trophy, followed by Avena.  For full results click the Lake Champlain Yacht Club link in "Our Friends" section.

PHRF A4:  In a  light breeze Galilee & Freya took advantage of pressure right downwind off Cumberland Head to overcome Souvenir's lead at the upwind mark and finish one-two respectively on the N-O course.  Souvenir takes third.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Soling A4:  With 1st and 3d place finishes Solstice edges TBD  for victory in Soling 4 regatta.  Obelix takes 3d place.  After the regatta, Peter Hall gave the first of what we expect to be a series of "Chalk Talks".  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

New Friend:   Tom Pillsworth aka "The Wine Guy" who crews on Galilee has acquired a chain of duty-free border stores and is offering VSC members special pricing on marine sunglasses, electronics and spirits.  Click on his link www.vinumport.com or contact Tom directly for details.

Royal Savage:   In near perfect sailing conditions of south winds 15-24 kts., 1' waves, and warm temps, VSC's Witchcraft finished 2d, Souvenir 4th and Galilee 5th overall in this tightly contested two race regatta.  The first race spread was a mere 1:15 seconds corrected between 1st and 5th places.  At one point or another, each competitor had the lead.  MBBC's Luna Sea took first and LCYC's Avena finished third overall.  For full results click the Mallet's Bay Boat Club link in "Our Friends" section.

Wednesday PHRF A3 abandoned due to high winds and seas.

Soling 3 - Under a dying breeze from the east, Chris Duley got off three Soling races and, using the Committee boat's twin Johnsons, (engines, not the boys on the boat) towed the bulk of the fleet in after the third race. Following the landing of the competitors, Bruce grilled up some fabulous chicken. Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Galilee win the Kent DeLord Cup by more than six minutes corrected over second place Witchcraft on a two legged in the bay course in light, variable winds.  TBD finishes third.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

Wednesday PHRF A2:

Congratulations to those PHRF Competitors who raced last night in south winds in the mid to upper twenties and stiff waves and survived.  With a special thank you to Mike Hagadorn and crew who braved big waves in a limping committee boat. We all know that boat with one engine is a hand full in decent weather, but in big air like last night, it is well more than that. Thank you again Mike!

All the crews did an excellent job, with Soundwave, the only competitor to fly a chute, playing the spinnaker card to its second Wednesday win in a row. Kjell Dahlen's Freya, with her one design rating was just 23 seconds behind corrected, with Craig and crew aboard Souvenir collecting third. Don Duley did a quick commissioning on TBD  just prior to the race and completed in 4th place.  JP Turgeon's Galilee, suffered a torn main, and the tack fitting on the bow broke right off giving her a DNS. All in all it was a sail makers dream night.

Soling 2: In gusty winds, Brian White's Solstice wins the first Soling race of the season.  Peter Hall's Obelix takes first overall in the two race regatta.  Hagadorn/Sajor/Trombley's USA 812 finish third and Dan Inhelder's Shadowfax fourth.  Click on Schedule and Results for complete results.

CORINTHIAN SPIRIT

Good sportsmanship goes a long way in life

Where do you draw the line between winning and losing? It’s simple. You don’t.

Good sportsmanship is important. It’s about helping each other without having to be asked. It’s about congratulating each other for a game well-played, and it’s about recognizing the positive effort of both sides. Either way, no matter the outcome, being a gracious competitor will provide a solid personal foundation for anyone involved in our sport. In yacht racing, good sportsmanship is commonly referred to as ‘Corinthian spirit’, based on the excitement of a common goal – to have fun during the thrill of competition. It’s important to point out that being a gracious competitor can be difficult even though you had a tough day. While good sportsmanship may be something largely recognized on the water, it’s vital to understand that it extends well beyond competitive activities. It forms an important part of our lives during our future years in business, teaching or other professions. It provides good guidance for our lives no matter what the activity.

THIS IS YOUR CLUB; IT WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU DO.

Volunteers Needed:  The committee boat needs a through cleaning and the port engine needs work. Also the canvas needs to be replaced. Dave Bashaw is contacting a mechanic to see if the engine can be repaired. Andy Sajor will contact canvas folks to get a new top. Joe McNichols helped Andy place the North and South marks, leaving the East, South and West yet to be placed. We need volunteers to place these marks.

Skippers please check the O.D. schedule for current assignments.  Click the Schedule and Results link.

Commodore's Cup: Who says cold, wet, windy sailing ain't fun?  Just ask the crew of Souvenir, who squeaked out a 35 second victory over Freya in this 3 hour, 16 mile initial 2010 Sunday Series race that started at VSC S, beat to VSC N, ran deeply to RN4 (AuSable Point) and finished on a beat at GC1.  Galilee finishes third.  For complete results click on the Schedule and Results link.  See Andy Sajor's excellent photos at the Photo Op link.

Special Sailing Instructions: We will be using the 2009 course book race numbers until further notice. So please pull out your old book or, if you have tossed your 2009 course book, go to "Our History" on this page, click on 2009 season, then click on NOR and Sailing Instructions for a copy of the 2009 race numbers.

Since it seems like the mark setting crew was unable to get to the club marks set, there may be a handout for the Commodore's Cup so look for the "come within hail" flag on the committee boat.  Andy Sajor will be the OD..

Soundwave wins PHRF A1 in a light air floater, taking the lead at the start and never relinquishing.  Freya finishes second; Souvenir third.  Click on Schedule and Results link for complete results.

Soling 1 abandoned due to lack of wind.

Galilee finishes Around Block Island Race 9th of 17 in the IRC 40 class and 34th of 82 overall in the IRC Division.  Go to http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_detail.cfm?Race_Number=1&eID=313 for complete results

Race Committee Boat Volunteers
Needed to clean up the committee boat and get it ready for the season, Ed and Dave are spearheading that project, so pop them an email if you can do some work. Right now, the boat is buried at the "elbow" of Cape Carter, and since they are in the process of replacing A and B docks, I do not know when we will get it out.

Sail Measuring Party:   (emphasis on party) at Ed's sail loft/barn on May 23rd. T

Burgers, sides and soda provided by the club.  BYOB. This is also an opportunity to get any unmeasured (sails not signed/certified by the sail maker) that you intend to race with, measured by our local pro, Rob McDowell. Yes we have pried him away from his vines to help us in this capacity so it will be a good time to see this former racer too.

It is also a special meeting of the club so we can officially vote in officers and discuss bylaw changes. \

In addition to that, Jennifer Michenelli, Chair of the Clinton Community College Regatta will be on hand to show off the "Wicking T" shirts and caps that will be available at a discount to VSC members to purchase. As VSC members, you have free entry into the race, but your bling and food will cost a nominal fee. Please remember that this is a fund raiser for the college scholarship fund, so please bring your checkbooks. We have worked out a package deal for competing boats for the dinner, shirts and caps. This year, learning from last, the food choices will include Lobster, Dan's Dangerous Dry Rubbed Ribs, 12 oz  Steak, Fisherman Platter and meals for kids (they want to make the land lubber end family friendly). There will be live music and a beer tent (bigger and better) too.  They are really going all out this year and are leaning heavy on VSC participation so lets not let them down.  Also new this year, will be a permanent trophy for the JAM fleet, so if you know folks who are not VSC racers but sail the Mayors Cup please invite them to this event. The race will be designed so you will be off the water in time to enjoy the festivities on the Bluff.

Peter Hall, has offered to give some chalk talks on Soling racing. I suspect he can talk on all types of competitive sailing having sailed all over the world, so lets not consider this a soling only audience and when we meet May 23rd, find a time and venue to have Peter share some of his "secrets to bullets".
